What is Windows?
Windows 10 is a series of operating systems that are developed by Microsoft and it was released as a part of its Windows NT family of operating systems.
It is the successor of Windows 8.1 in the series. This was broadly released for the general public on 29 July 2015. This version received mostly all the positive reviews for its original release (that of the desktop-oriented interface). Critics praised the desktop-oriented interface of the version in line with the previous one.
They also praised the improvements to bundled software of Windows 10, than that of Windows 8.1. Xbox Live integration, as well as the functionality and capabilities of the Cortana personal assistant and the replacement of Internet Explorer with Edge.
The company aimed to have Windows 10 installed on over a billion devices within 3 years of timespan in the beginning, but it took almost 5 years that on 16 March 2020 to reach the goal. Now as of November 2020, it is estimated that Windows 10 is running on 77% of Windows PC. So, we need to follow a few ways for the same. And the steps for them are as follows:-
Solution 1 – Delete Backup files via File History.
Usually, the copies of all the files and docs can be saved in File History. So if ever any of the files get damaged, deleted, or misplaced accidentally then the files can be restored from the File History. However, these backup files take up more space.
Step 1 :
Press the ‘Windows’ + ‘R’ to open the run box. Then type in: “control” and press enter.
Inside the Control Panel, click on “System and Security” and then click on “File History”.
In the “File History” window click on “Advanced settings” on the left side.
After entering in “Advanced settings” click on “Clean up versions”. Once the “File History Cleanup” box appears up, select the target time period of the files and then click on “Clean Up”.
When the cleaning process is completed, click on “Ok”.
Solution 2 – Delete Backup files using Command Prompt.
Fhmanagew.exe is a file history management tool. And executing this in the Command prompt can delete all the versions of the files within a specified no. of days.
Step 1 :
Press the “Windows” + “R” key to open the Run box. Then type in: “cmd” and press enter.
After opening the Command prompt, type in one of the commands given below according to which time period version we want to delete and then press the enter.
- More than 1 month – FhManagew.exe -cleanup 30
- More than 3 months – FhManagew.exe -cleanup 90
- More than 6 months – FhManagew.exe -cleanup 180
- More than 1 year (by default) – FhManagew.exe -cleanup 365
If the previous version of the files can not be found, then try deleting recent files.
For e.g.: Execute the command – FhManagew.exe -cleanup 30
Solution 3 – Delete System Image Backup by Managing Windows Backup Disk Space.
In Windows 10, the backup files and data in the desktop or in default Windows folders, a system image will be created automatically as long as we do not set the backup plan. However, the increase in backup data will lead to insufficiency in the disk space, we can also delete backup files and Window system images backups by managing disk space.
Press the “Windows” + “R” key to open the Run box. Then type in: “control” and press enter.
After opening the Control Panel, click on “Backup and Restore (Window 7)” under the “System and Security” option. And then click on “Manage Space”.
In the “Manage Windows Backup Disk Space” window, there are 2 options “View Backup” and “Change Settings”.
- If we select the option “View Backup”, then we will choose the time period of the backup files we want to delete and then click on “Delete”.
- If we select the “Change settings” option, then we can choose to delete the system images to free up disk space.
Solution 4 – Remove the System Backup Folder Windows.old by Disk Cleanup.
In Windows 10, a backup folder named Windows.old appears in the system disk. The Windows.old folder contains the system files and software installation files of the previous system version.
We manually remove the folder Windows.old, but please note once the folder is deleted then we will not be allowed to revert back to the previous Windows version.
Right-click on the system disk and select “Properties”.
In the “Properties” window, click “Disk Cleanup”. Then go to “Cleanup system files”.
In the list of “Files to Delete”, check the box of “Previous Windows Installation” and then click on “Ok”.
